Personal Narrative
For this project we have to help someone is some way. As I brain stormed I couldn’t get my mind off of the nursing home. Last year for my CNA class at the Van Buren Technology Center, we had volunteered at a nursing home all the time. So I thought it would be a great chance to see the residents again. I absolutely love seeing them smile and laugh, just one little thing could make their day. But my partner, Casey Zimmer and I ran into some difficulties on the way.
Our first plan fell through. We had planned to volunteer at the Bronson Nursing and Rehabilitation, because that is where we volunteered last year. First we thought it would be easy to set it up. I called Jodee, which is the activities director for Bronson, she was up for having us come in and volunteer. Jodee emailed two application forms that day for Casey and I to fill out. We filled out the applications later that day and emailed them back. We waited for a response for three days before I emailed her to ask her if she had the chance to look at the applications and run the background screening, I got no response. Later that day, after school I called and she wasn’t in the office so I left a voice mail. We continuously tried to contact Jodee with phone calls, emails, and even went to the facility. After we decided we have to goto our back-up plan, she called my the Sunday after our first visit was due.
Our backup plan was still a nursing home, but a different one. White Oaks also located in Lawton. We called them and set up everything. We didn’t have any applications to fill out. This nursing home we are going to help feed the residents, help with medical care, crafts, activities and help with physical therapy. So by our next visit Casey and I are going to have to visits in. I’m very excited to help these people that have barely anything, some don’t even have anyone to visit them.
