- My one example of inferred information is how everyone thinks Sarah Byrnes needs Eric Calhoune, but i's actually Eric that needs Sarah. On page 77 Eric says "I was fat and clumsy and afraid. I wanted to be tough like Sarah Byrnes, to stand straight and tall, oblivious to my guilt eclipsing my belt buckle, and say, "Up yours!"" This is showing how Sarah Byrnes is Eric's role model.
- My other example of inferred information is how when Jody was telling Eric how she had gotten an abortion and all Mark could say was how his life would be better, that his life won't be ruined anymore.
- My first example of explicit information is how Virgil Byrnes is an evil man. They say this all through out the story, ever since chapter one. In chapter 18 Sarah saids "He used to tie me up. He wouldn't let me eat. He locked me up sometimes. He's bad, Ms. Lermy." (Page 278) this is isn't just basically saying he's mean, but giving more then one example on how he is mean. He doesn't do these things out of anger, but he does it because that's who he is.
- My second example of explicit information is
11-12.2
- Individuals vs. society: Sarah Byrnes vs. High School
- Confronting Bullies: Jody confronting Mark Brittain
- The struggle understand oneself: Mark Brittain trying to understand himself.
11-12.3
- When the author uses 'crank' in this sentence, ".. but when a subject bangs up against his religious beliefs, he gets cranked, and anyhow I don't know what I think about this." (Page 122) Crutcher uses this word to show how angry Mark gets during the discussion of abortions.
- With the argument with Eric's mother and her boyfriend, Carver she said "And you're about to learn it." Her tone is softer, and I can she Mom backing off her anger a bit.." This is showing how when she talked softer and showing how she is going to make him pay for what Carver has done. (Page 164)
- When Mr.Brynes is in the back of Eric's car trying to get Eric to tell him where Sarah Brynes is it said "He laughs. "You only know I'll hurt you if you don't." (page 249) The way Mr.Brynes laughs before he said that is showing he's enjoying hurting Eric, and wouldn't have a problem with hurting Eric more.
- When Eric and Ellerby were called down to the office by Mautz to discuss about how Mark tried to overdose on pills and kill himself. When the author said "Mautz's neck is swelling, his eyes are blazing.." (page 229) This is showing that Mautz is getting so mad that you can see it.
- When Eric goes to see Sarah is the hospital the author said "I almost fall asleep sitting on the couch beside Sarah Brynes thinking new things to say to her brick wall self." (page 54) This is showing that she is truly ignoring everyone. Sarah is literally so quit that she's like a brick wall.
- The way the author tells this story is great. He doesn't tell you all the back ground information at the beginning. So every chapter or flashback we learn more information and it goes all together. It keeps the reader interested and wanting to read more.
- Irony- In chapter 8 when in Lemry class they were discussing about abortion. When Mark saids "The truth is, potential mothers and people who conspire with potential mothers allow abortion will pay forever in the afterlife." (Page 123) Little did everyone know that Mark made his girlfriend, Jody get an abortion.
- Sarcasm- Also in chapter 8 when discussion about abortion. When Eric saids "Yes sir, detective. I knew they could make a baby, but I gave the, a home in my sock anyway." (page 127) Eric was trying to lighten up the mood and be funny, but sarcastic.
